Software Engineer II Interview Experience - New York, New York

Process

The first step was a call with the hiring manager. Half of it consisted of standard phone screen questions, and the other half featured front-end trivia. I was not forewarned that there would be technical questions during the phone screen, so it felt like an ambush. The questions asked were not a good reflection of a developer's skills. I doubt anyone would have what they asked memorized—it's very much something that you Google on the job.

Next, I was given a choice for the technical assessment: either a live, hour-long algorithmic coding challenge with a member of the team, or a take-home assessment. When describing the two choices, the hiring manager pushed heavily for the take-home, citing that it "was the easier of the two" and that they use it as a "basis for the onsite."

I opted for the take-home. Naturally, the four-hour estimate was nowhere close to the actual time it took to complete the assignment. The goal was to build a front-end React application using Redux for state management, with the tech stack prescribed in the assignment. Overall, the assignment took me about two days to meet all the requirements.

After submitting the code challenge, the hiring manager said they would get back to me with next steps. As you can probably guess, they did not. There was no feedback either.

Overall, a pretty terrible interview experience. I recommend not sinking too much time into the take-home and just doing the live coding challenge.
