Pros

Great Benefits Competitive Pay Dogs in the Office WFH Nice RSU Incentives

Cons

Lots of "paperwork" involved in shipping code and deploying it to production (change requests), and too many approvals required.

Many hires during the pandemic were not the best quality given the grade they were hired at.

Performance management getting too detailed and involved. It did not seem to be effective at addressing the above point.

Political divides creating tension and driving a wedge between coworkers. These may also be affecting promotion and hiring decisions.

Towards the end, I spent more time answering questions from engineers 2 levels above than getting my own work done.

Advice to Management

The "Operating Principles" are holding Chewy Engineering back. Stop emphasizing them for engineers.

Soft roles require comparisons to qualitative metrics to measure performance against; hard roles have measurable outputs.

Place more emphasis on the technical competence of those in Engineering leadership roles and empower them to tell you who their most valuable employees are.
