Software Engineer Interview Experience - San Jose, California

Process

HR called to schedule an interview with one of Cloudera's engineers. Although I informed them that I am a Java developer, the interview consisted mostly of C++ questions.

There was a programming question during my phone interview: to find the power of a number using a log n solution. However, the interviewer stated it was too complicated for him to understand. The optimal solution uses bitwise operators, and I don't believe anyone could reach that bitwise solution within the given time.

I used regular Java to solve it and got the correct answer, but the interviewer didn't try to understand it. He then proceeded to ask C++ questions about virtual functions and how they work, questioning my knowledge of virtual tables and similar concepts.

Although I answered his questions, he didn't seem to grasp my explanations and even provided an incorrect one himself. He concluded by saying, "You'll have to Google it." The interview was pathetic.

I do not wish to interview with Cloudera in the near future if this individual is conducting phone interviews.
