It was actually a pretty smooth experience until the recruiter stopped responding to me after telling me they would be in touch soon.

When I spend 8+ hours of my time interviewing, I don't think the courtesy of a rejection email is an unreasonable request.

Any recruiter who tells you this is the norm is not a good recruiter, and any company that does this likely does not hold its employees in very high regard.
