Software Engineer (Internship) Interview Experience - Canada

Process

I applied in April 2018 for a fall internship position. A friend recommended me, and I was offered an interview just a few days later. However, interviews didn't take place until late June and July.

I had three interviews:

  • The first was a technical question asking me to design an equivalent to Splitwise. I was given an hour.
  • The second was a 30-minute chat with my would-be manager.
  • The third was another technical, where I was given two relatively easy questions and 30 minutes to complete them.

The process was very opaque, and they didn't explain why it took 3-4 months to begin interviewing. I came very close to failing the second technical, which would have killed my chances. I was frustrated because they never asked me about my experience or interests.

Questions

Implement an app where multiple friends want to split the bill from a camping trip.

Each has paid for different things, and each owes for different things.

Every time you complete one step, they add another thing to implement.

Not technically difficult, but requires good communication and clean coding.
