Pros
  • Low-skilled Costco employees are welcome.
  • Job security if you're incompetent.
  • Laidback environment because the company prioritizes social interactions over productivity.
  • Their definition of "recognition" is you ask them to recognize you (application needed). It's a "pro" if you do not like to be pleasantly surprised and disagree with the dictionary definition of "recognition".
  • They take care of their warehouse employees. In fact, they take care of them so much that they treat them as equals. If warehouse employees do not get to have vacations during the holiday season, so should the corporate employees who can work 100% remotely on their computers.
Cons

Incompetent people run the show. This company is loyalty-based, not merit-based.

Stay away if you are any of the following:

  • Millennial or younger
  • Skilled
  • Experienced in the IT industry
  • Educated

You will not get valued here.

To get promoted, you have to have worked at a warehouse for years doing jobs with very low skill requirements. You can also be qualified if you spend years in the corporate office staring at a wall. Just make sure executives and managers physically see you, and that you master the art of brown-nosing.

Your powers are useless here.

Oddly enough, there is a strong bias against internal promotions compared to new hires — which shows a bait-and-switch strategy to hiring.

A resulting problem of their system is RACIAL DISCRIMINATION. It is not open discrimination, mind you, but if you are of a "certain" race, you're the CEO, VPs, directors, and the managers.

You also get promoted to senior faster despite having only three years of experience. You get RESERVED parking, aka. "Old White Men Privilege Parking".

Essentially, they want to display to the newer, younger, and more diverse employees who are in power.

The end result in the present is similar to what systemic racism created in the US. It was not the intention, but it is the result. The balance of power favors those who were carried over from the earlier, more discriminatory time period. Make no mistake, these people refuse to let go of their power.

Advice to Management

Do not compare us to other companies. They are established tech and modern companies; you should adjust to what we realistically have.

To the three MR. Ts (fireside/poolside - which is tone-deaf considering we can't afford a house with a fireplace or a pool based on the salary you give us, adjusted for inflation), your jobs are becoming relics of the past and your decisions are based on self-preservation. Stop hiding behind the "Costco Culture" shield. If you feel like you are perfect leaders, that is because you are surrounded by sycophants and wouldn't tell you what's really going on in fear of retaliation and destabilizing the status quo. There are good people out there but their voices remain unheard. I can already hear you defending yourselves.

You can't take criticism. You read criticism and defend the current process, instead of using said criticism to improve. What a joke of a company Costco is in the 21st century.

I am writing this review because I want Costco to succeed, for those good people left in this company. People are leaving because you're all too busy praising yourselves.

. . . .

I am getting really tired of your refusal to recognize internal non-seasoned employees. You give priority to new hires and really old-time employees. You give bonuses to people already on top, drawing a line to positions you actively refuse to give to the employee. You give a stock bonus to people that do not exist, and you would not promote people to that level even if they are qualified. Essentially, you built that artificial wall.

Your "exceptional employees" are the employees with the brownest nose. You refuse to promote upon team change, because, "reasons". If the employee is qualified, they should get what they deserve and not be refused promotion because of "Costco rules".

A lot of EXISTING employees have expertise they brought to Costco, which you refuse to recognize. You only recognize skills contributed inside Costco when evaluating. It's the Costco trap. There are limited chances to use skills required in employee promotion. This means there is absolutely no way to get promoted without a special kind of treatment. What a dumb rule.
