Software Engineer Interview Experience - Berlin, Germany

December 2, 2025
Negative ExperienceNo Offer

Process

The process took 2 weeks.

After applying on LinkedIn, I assumed an HR would reach out to me, but I got an automated mail asking me to complete a coding challenge instead. The challenge had:

  • A DS/algo problem, a simple matrix problem disguised as a wooden puzzle game
  • Some CSS MCQ questions
  • Some SQL joins, etc.

I did a simple solution at first, but I still had time left, so I optimized it.

Then a short email arrived asking for availability for the next round. The next round was just a recruiter call, which should have been the first round. I joined and talked about my projects. She told me about the next steps of the process: after the call, there would be a DS/algo round, some live coding, etc. This was weird because the position was a front-end engineer, and multiple rounds of DS/algo are really unnecessary, but I was prepared anyway.

Then 2 days later, I got an email saying I was rejected, with no feedback or anything.

Questions

Matrix with values like x, 0, 1, 2..., where x is walls, and 1, 2 are different puzzle pieces. Return the piece which can be safely removed (no other piece on the right of it).
