UI Engineer Interview Experience - United States

Process

I applied at CS via an employee referral. The full timeline from when I submitted my application to when I signed my offer letter was 2 months. However, there were some unique circumstances that caused it to take longer than usual, so I'd expect it's much faster for most. All steps were done remotely over Zoom.

The process:

  • Interview with manager: The usual "getting to know you and the role" back-and-forth, but it wasn't just an informational interview as I was also asked some technical knowledge questions.
  • Interview with 2 engineers: A more in-depth discussion on the role, department, company, and values, as well as my experience and workflow. The questions were very thought-provoking.
  • Take-home code challenge: This was the only technical interview/code challenge I did out of dozens of interviews that was both relevant to the actual job and not just designed to weed people out. I was very impressed by it and actually enjoyed it.
  • Code review with 2 engineers: Review of my take-home, discussing further development. It was pretty casual and comfortable; we talked through a bit of pseudo code but no whiteboarding.
  • Final interview with hiring manager: An informational interview, mostly getting to know the specifics of the team, what I'd be working on, training, the tech stack, etc.
  • Offers: Verbal offer, written offer, and extensive background check.

The recruiter I worked with throughout the whole process was extremely helpful and communicative. It was a fantastic interview experience, and I couldn't have been more thrilled to accept the job offer!

Questions

While I can't provide specifics due to an NDA, the questions in each round were extremely thoughtful, intentional, important, and reasonable.

There was no "what's your greatest weakness" or "fizzbuzz" nonsense. The questions were all highly relevant to the job and great for determining values and culture fit.

I was SO impressed with the interviewing questions; it was unlike any interview I had had before (engineering or otherwise). It's what convinced me that this was the place I want to be.
