I was so excited by this interview because I really like Datadog as a regular user from my current job. It's a great application.
The interviewer's native language was Spanish, like myself. So I asked her on LinkedIn if she wanted to switch to Spanish, but she didn't respond. Then, at the meeting, I asked one more time, very politely. No, she insisted on keeping it in English, even though the role was for the office in Madrid, España. She also said that it was important that I could write and speak in English, which I proved. Weird, but it wasn't terrible.
Before she started talking about the company, I decided to clear up my initial doubts:
Is this interview for the Madrid site only, or could it be for other sites? She didn't consider it and insisted that the position was for Madrid only.
Can I choose to work remotely and go to the office when I choose or when something comes up? She said no, that they work in a hybrid way (2 remote, 3 office), like a prehistoric company before Covid. I explained why I wanted remote work, even while being close to the office, but she didn't try to negotiate anything. I think she didn't like my approach, and she finished the meeting instantaneously. It's a personal record: only 7 minutes of interview!
Lastly, I started reading opinions here on Glassdoor about the offices, and there are too many complaints about how toxic they are.
My advice for people looking to choose a job is to pay attention to the maniacal control cultures that some companies still have. We've demonstrated that we work very well remotely. There are too many smart companies that trust their employees.
We did not reach that section.
