First round: Two coding questions with an engineer. A very pleasant experience; I learned a lot about the culture and product.
Take-home project: This project took a little while to complete. I made sure to cover edge cases and provide good documentation for how I would improve it in the future.
On-site interviews: Three separate interviews: one with the team lead, one with a senior SWE, and one with the director.
All interviews went well. I had good discussions with each member and gained further insight into Datadog.
Outcome: The recruiter gave feedback that I did well on coding and design, and had a good discussion with the director. I was rejected because the team felt I wasn’t enthusiastic enough about Datadog. This feedback was very vague, subjective, and disappointing. The recruiter cited that I didn’t ask enough questions at the end of each interview (I asked 2-3, depending on the amount of time left per interview).
Overall, a good experience until the end. For all the time and effort I put into their interview process, it’s ridiculous to say I wasn’t interested or enthusiastic. Additionally, with such vague feedback, I can’t even work on improving this for future interviews.
