“This job is not your typical 9-to-5. We have ambitious goals and want the product to evolve at a fast pace. You will frequently be asked to work on weekends and outside regular hours. Are you okay with that?” the interviewer said.

I replied, “Yes, if I am properly compensated.”

They responded, “We do not pay overtime.”

I asked, “Can I use those extra hours as time off or vacation later?”

They said, “Yes, but you need to get approval from your manager at least two months in advance.”

So I said, “I imagine the base salary must be excellent! At my previous company, I was making $10k/month with similar expectations, so I assume the salary is in that range as well.”

They replied, “No, that is far beyond what we can offer. The salary depends on your interview performance, but the maximum we can pay — if you score 100% — is $7k/month.”

At that point, I said, “I believe we should end the interview here. Thank you.”
