I applied for a position at Dell EMC in Egypt.
I had a phone interview, and the following week, I had a technical interview at the company.
The week after that, I had an HR interview and another interview with the Business Line Manager.
The interviews went great. I performed well.
After another week, I received a call from HR informing me that I had been accepted and that they would get back to me with an offer. They wanted to give me a heads-up.
I was genuinely excited and happy that my hard work to land this job had paid off.
Unfortunately, this situation took a turn for the worse after another two weeks. They never called during that entire two-week period. So, I decided to send an email to HR.
They replied, stating they would contact me in two days. They did, and said, "Sorry, the position has been filled, but there is another vacancy. We have forwarded your application to the team responsible; they should call you with an offer, and you won't need to go through any more interviews since you have already passed them."
I tried to discuss what had happened, questioning how they could call me to say I was accepted for the position and then, after two weeks, tell me it had been filled. They didn't provide a rational explanation. She stated that this was supposed to happen and that it usually doesn't, but it happened to me.
I believe this was a disorganized situation, possibly a sign of corruption or an administrative mistake, though that is highly unlikely.
What is amusing is that when they called to tell me I was accepted, it was April 1st.
I never thought something like this would happen at a multinational company, but I suppose that's Egypt. It's a mess and always will be, even at multinational companies with branches here in this crooked country.
Regarding the other vacancy, I'm unsure if they will call. I believe she was merely offering false hope and attempting to avoid embarrassment.
I suspect she would not have called unless I had sent that email inquiring about the offer that took so long. In fact, I think the offer may have been given to someone with leverage.
The result of the phone call where I was told I got accepted is that I turned down three interviews, missed an employment fair, and informed my current employer that I would be leaving soon. Therefore, I will likely be out of a job after my notice period.
A few days later, Dell EMC was present at an employment fair, and their booklet listed a vacancy for an Upgrade Engineer. So, I don't understand how she said it was filled.
