Pros

Depending on the group, the culture can be fun, social, or work-as-hard-as-you-want (challenging or not), and casual.

Cons

First-line management did not know how to manage people at times. Sometimes lines were crossed that were inappropriate. The casual culture was good, except at times when jokes crossed the line. Some engineers were really non-social and did not like to work as a team member; instead, they would be super negative and harassing. These people were technically sound but were not helped to improve morale, making some groups rather uncomfortable and feel like they were walking on eggshells, versus being encouraged and grown. Left due to culture issues.

Advice to Management

A few strong technical players that are not team players ruins it for all.

Reduction in morale doesn't prove to increase work effectiveness.

The few may be able to out perform while stressing others out, but it does nothing to the bottom line for the business.

Others don't learn, and the few that are rewarded/ignored promote poor culture.

Allowing a casual culture but also enforcing clear HR guidelines so people aren't crossing lines (management or otherwise) would be wise.

Teasing and harassing is really not okay in a professional environment.
