Pros

There are plenty of opportunities to learn new things. Tools are in place to allow you to learn whatever you want technically.

I work with a very good team of developers that follow all the best software practices.

Flexi-time and the ability to work from home whenever you want.

Quarterly awards and recognition for doing a good job.

Cons

The majority of teams involved in the project I work on do not follow best practices. Very few unit tests are written for new features.

Very regular unpaid weekend work is expected. A minimum of one weekend per month is expected with no compensation. Sometimes you need to be online just to look like you are working so that other teams don't complain.

Pay for junior developers is about 20% below market average.

For a junior dev, there isn't enough hands-on experience writing code. The majority of the time is spent fixing defects.

Advice to Management

Rectify the weekend work problems. It is expected to work the occasional weekend when necessary, but because of bad practices within development, it is causing unnecessary extra work on a regular basis.

Staff are treated as a number rather than a person.
