Not a good place for engineers

Pros

Bonus structure is generous (or at least it used to be in 2009 and previous). Other employees are usually friendly. Nice campus/amenities, like a fitness center.

Cons

No innovation - products are developed overseas for the most part. Although they profess to want to be innovative, they are adverse to the costs of actual R&D.

Very much on rails - they want to produce the same products year over year for less cost.

They want engineers, but don't seem to know what to do with them. Most of the engineers I know who work there are either in danger of losing their jobs or doing non-engineering tasks (e.g., project management, marketing, etc.).

Advice to Management

Learn to be innovative, and be ready to take risks.

Hardware is a commodity item that is losing value as more, cheaper competitors enter the market.

While I hear software and solutions is the future of Dell, I don't see any interest in committing resources there.
