Process

  1. Two to three emails to check technical experience on very specific technologies. Responses back were condescending and unprofessional.

  2. Eventually a month later they deigned to video call me for an initial screening with a solution architect. This went well.

  3. A technical interview with a panel of 4-5 Deloitte contractors. This was also unprofessional and they weren't taking it seriously at all. The feeling I got was of a boys' club having a jolly on company time.

3a. A rapid fire of obscure latest tech buzzword bingo followed from their senior architect, who was the epitome of Uncle Bob's clean coder architect stereotype. Many of the questions asked were ones I'd made clear in my emails I had no experience in. Still, I have 15 years of experience in relevant tech, so I batted away the majority of the attempts to baffle me. I counted three separate instances where I gave a correct answer, but no one on the call had seemed to have registered it.

3b. A 'whiteboarding' task was sprung upon me by the solution architect without adequate explanation, just showing several bullet points in their PowerPoint presentation, which was then closed after 30 seconds. While I attempted to paste the screenshots on two slides into a photo editor and juggle a whiteboarding website, the solution architect (presumably thinking he was not on screen) covered his eyes and put his head in his hands. If this had occurred in a face-to-face interview, I would have seen all I needed to see. Deeply unprofessional. Nevertheless, I continued.

3c. Find the problems in the code sample. Fairly straightforward, but when I indicated the line-by-line issues, they told me they wanted a 'general overview' of the issues. Because all code reviews are done under time pressure in a panel interview environment. To be fair, the guys in charge of this part of the test were good people, unlike the toxic solution architect.

Following this, I had no response back whatsoever.

I would say this was easily the worst interview of my 20-year IT career. I had heard bad things about this office from a friend, but got a clear indication of how unpleasant it would be to work there from this interview.

I've now accepted a Solutions Architect role elsewhere. The interview process there was like light and day compared to this clearly toxic team. Avoid.
