Process

I arrived early for my interview, and they kept me waiting. They got to me fairly later than expected and had to apologize. They expedited the interview during their transition from BAMTech to Disney Streaming Services.

They liked me and my resume and offered me capped hours at the part-time rate. I negotiated for slightly higher, but either way, I would not be able to afford to live and pursue my master's degree with an unknown amount of time commitment required for my remote master's degree.

I was also curious about work in themed entertainment since my youth and potentially pursuing a career in Imagineering and themed entertainment because everything cannot be remote all the time, and I write that as a person in favor of remote working!

My upcoming schedule at the time consisted potentially of having class with a former Disney Imagineer, which I had skipped in my undergrad studies, and it eventually did. I like streaming, the media business, themed entertainment, and pretty much any form of entertainment for that matter because my background, experience, and familiarity with different mediums is broad. I wanted to make sure I was a cultural fit for their company.

They at one point said, "You don't have to reinvent the wheel," which I acknowledged, but isn't that what innovation involves?

They showed me some areas of their facility in Chelsea Market. The two people I interacted with seemed professional. They asked about competing offers and printed a contract for me to look over and consider signing.

I didn't sign and ended up enrolling in the Disney College Program at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom and the ESPN Wide World of Sport for operations in attractions, which understandably has a significant pay differential, in a completely different entertainment industry. I had class with the master planner of EPCOT through my school but did not get to help with the NBA bubble, which we were prepping for on location.

Six weeks in, and coronavirus news started circulating worldwide. Bob Chapek became the new CEO after roughly 15 years of Bob Iger's leadership, and Disney let go of half of their employees company-wide. Half the Imagineers were let go in the process too.

I'm originally from Florida and love the industry and storytelling styles common to location-based storytelling there, which streaming could never fully replace due to the importance of people and first-person interaction. I don't necessarily have to continue with Disney, but needless to say, I'm a little frustrated.

I also ended up getting an offer to work at the Tokyo Olympics for broadcasting, which to some people would seem like the offer of a lifetime, but due to COVID, it is very different and mentally depressing, especially with the strict rules, and I like strict rules.

I guess that's what I get for pursuing an adventurous career though! I'm not complaining.

Questions

Me to them: I asked, "Am I interviewing with BAMTech or Disney?" due to company culture and history, to which they responded that it was a fair question.

Them to me: Do you like sports? What kind of streaming technologies are you familiar with? Can you guide someone through multiple devices and computer-related consoles through the internet?

Me to them: Based on the description listed online, am I correct to assume this is a purely technical, customer-focused media position, or is there anything creatively involved other than the other listed positions?
