I am a current Principal Engineer at Mozilla. After informing the recruiter that I was a college dropout with 16 years of experience, I was told that Disney requires a degree. However, without one, they have guidelines for experience. So, with no degree, the qualifications are as follows:
15 years of experience – non-senior engineer 17 years of experience – senior engineer 19 years of experience – lead engineer
They say this is for Diversity and Inclusion and that their HR team worked hard on these guidelines. I think this undervalues a good chunk of candidates who have more experience than a 4-year college graduate.
For instance, I have chased VC funding and managed company finances, all while developing scalable software solutions. I would encourage Disney to rethink these numbers and requirements because the best developers I have ever worked with come from bootcamps and have no degrees or degrees not even in Comp Sci.
Do you have a degree?
