Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience - San Francisco, California

Process

I applied online and had an introductory chat with the recruiter. They then proceeded to set up an initial tech screen with the hiring manager.

After the first half of a deep dive into my resume and current work, the hiring manager also conducted a pair programming exercise (JavaScript async & promises and removing duplicates from a given list).

What followed was a virtual onsite (given the COVID-19 situation) of 4 hours. These rounds focused on data structures, algorithms, and complexity optimizations, with one round featuring a very open-ended system design question to design a chat application.

Most of the interviewers were helpful, but they were focused on solving the problem and hardly interested in getting to know my working style or body of work. One particular interviewer, who happened to be my last interview, single-handedly lowered the rating for my interview experience. She was outright critical of my solution, impatient, and constantly wanted to dry-run my partial solution with examples. The intrusion made it hard to focus.
