Software Developer Interview Experience - Boston, Massachusetts

February 1, 2015
Negative ExperienceNo Offer

Process

Awful. The technical recruitment manager was unpleasant and unresponsive throughout the whole experience. He said I'd hear back about an onsite interview the day after my initial phone screen and then proceeded to disappear for 3 weeks without answering emails.

Given no choice, I had to email his superior and ask what was up. After that, I finally got the onsite interview.

The engineers I interviewed with were nice enough, and the three technical interviews were fair. At the conclusion of the onsite interviews, I met with the technical recruitment manager once again. He said, "Everything looks great - if you failed any of the interviews, we would've cut everything short. I guess all I have to do is make you an excellent offer."

We discussed salary. His range was between 50k-60k for an entry-level software engineer, about 20k below the average Glassdoor salary for an entry-level position in the area (Boston's an expensive city).

I pushed back a bit, asking for 65k, and he became nasty about it.

Still, I'm a huge sports fan and I could convince myself that the job was worth it for a 20k below market salary. I went home thinking I landed the job. The manager said I'd hear back in the next few days.

Though I'm thankful that he didn't wait another 3 weeks to give me the verdict, he called me up to tell me (after telling me to hold once for another caller) that I didn't get the job. He said that I could apply for a 40k/year developer job at their NYC office, but I'd have to start from square one again.

I was intent on moving to Boston for personal reasons, which he knew about. I can't help but feel like he wanted to take advantage of that and force me into taking a super undermarket salary.
