Pros
  • Brilliant coworkers
  • Fast-paced work
  • Fun office environment
  • Generous perks
  • Mission-driven
  • Transparent company culture
Cons
  • Cliquey
  • Company culture rewards those who put work above all else (i.e., lack of work-life balance).
  • Expectations vary wildly between teams.
  • High burnout rate.
  • Insufficient leadership resources (i.e., if you can't deduce what senior management is really looking for, you'll flounder).
  • Lack of action on known systemic issues.
  • Most of the awesome folks left years ago.
  • Poor communication between teams and management.
Advice to Management
  1. Management tells employees to open up about work concerns. Every time I tried to reach out to my manager about problems, though, I was rebuffed rather than having my concerns heard. When my concerns were heard, management said it was an acknowledged issue, but nothing came out of it year after year. I recognize Duolingo has a fast-paced culture, but it would help employee morale if the company listened and took action instead of expecting employees to adapt.

  2. Shortly after being switched to my third team in four years, I was suddenly put on a Performance Improvement Plan. At the time, I believed I had done good work over the past four years, so I was confused and distressed about this news. When an employee comes to you confused and distressed about the news, don't tell them to fix their own problems, ask them to keep quiet for the sake of company morale, and offer them a severance package.
