Software Engineer Interview Experience - Bellevue, Washington

Process

Good, talented engineers stay out of the Bellevue office. I had a very bad experience due to the following reasons:

  • Irresponsible Recruiter: While I shouldn't blame the company for one person, the recruiter sent incorrect emails and required multiple follow-up emails.
  • Interviewer Disruptions: Interviewers took phone calls during whiteboard sessions, showing a lack of professionalism.
  • Irrelevant Technical Questions: I was asked very specific Java questions about explaining a library. I wasn't asked about my prior experience or tested on problem-solving skills.
  • Unprofessional Onsite: There was no room booked for my onsite interview. One interviewer even joked, "You'll see a lot of similar problems if you join here in the future, and the actual work you do is less."
  • Awkward Lunch Interview: The lunch interview itself was fine, and the interviewer was smart. However, he asked if I wanted to smoke and then smoked cigarettes while asking me questions after we went to a nearby burger place.
  • Unprepared Interviewer: Another interviewer was totally unprepared. He asked life questions. As someone who conducts many interviews, I can certainly say these were not behavioral questions.
  • Mixed Interview Quality: Two interviewers (one at lunch and another at a bar) were very smart and asked good questions. The rest conducted poor interviews that did not test my skills. The questions were not related to the job description or my experience.
  • Unreimbursed Expenses: Finally, they never reimbursed my interview expenses after multiple follow-up emails.

I was able to get a sense of the work culture, coworkers, and what everyday life looks like there. I am not sure about other offices, but the Bellevue office looked like a bad place to work. I had other better offers and chose them.
