I've had hundreds of interviews, and this one is by far the worst experience I've encountered in my life (interview process-wise).
My interview process began in mid-September 2020 when I was contacted by eBay HR for an MTS2 position in Toronto.
The first interview, with a technical hiring manager, was scheduled for September 13 around 10 AM on Zoom. I took a day off to be more comfortable for the interview, but the person never showed up. I tried to contact HR, but she never replied. In the afternoon, the manager called me without apologizing, asking if I could take the interview the next day, September 14. I accepted and took another day off.
The interview was simple (2 hours), but the person was extremely arrogant, distracted, and seemed uninterested in the interview at all, which was frustrating (and again, he never apologized for the previous day).
A few days later, I heard from HR that I was advancing to the next step. They asked me to provide three or four days when I could be scheduled for five more technical interviews (three coding and two architecture).
I gave her my dates, but she didn't reply at all, even after I followed up several times. Two weeks later, she sent me an email stating that eBay was on a hiring freeze but had decided to make an exception for my case. She asked me to provide yet another three or four days for the next rounds (as the first days I provided had passed).
I did, and the next round started in mid-October.
The interviews consisted of medium to hard LeetCode questions, covering trees, search, and recursion.
One of the interviews was with the same hiring manager from my first round, and he didn't show up again! He sent me an email later asking me to wait one more hour so he could finish an important meeting, not caring about my schedule.
I finished this final round feeling confident enough and was hoping for an offer after the roller coaster I went through and the time and energy I spent on their process.
Two weeks later, I received an email from HR informing me that I had passed the interview but, unfortunately, eBay was on a hiring freeze and I would be contacted at a later time. I tried to ask her for more details about this "later time," but she never replied. She simply decided to ghost me, and even the hiring manager, whose email I had, ghosted me.
I'm writing this today because three months have passed, and I know that even if I receive an offer now, I will not accept it due to the disrespect I've endured.
Treating people like assets is not the way to go, eBay. You need to show more respect to interviewees. Whether the interview is positive or negative, respect and consideration should be mutual. We, the interviewees, invest so much time and effort (in my case, even money, as I took almost a week off work in total for your process).
I sincerely hope this interview description will be seen by some eBay high executives and prompt them to start providing guidelines to their interviewers and HR. This process needs to be improved ASAP if you still want people to look up to your company.
