Recruiter screen call, 30 minutes. It explains a little about the role at a high level, asks a few questions about your background, and gets rough salary expectations.
Followed by a hiring manager interview.
Manager interview was a poor experience. The interviewer barely made eye contact, didn't smile, or say hello when I joined the call. They didn't even introduce themselves or allow me to introduce myself – they just dived straight into some abstract visual tests.
I have no problem with some tricky sub-Google-style tests if that's the way the interviewer wants to go. But the first thing I look for in an organization is a bit of kindness and humanity, none of which was on display here.
To be honest, the rudeness and lack of basic courtesy annoyed me almost from the get-go. After about 10 minutes of the attitude, I challenged the interviewer on why we had not made any attempt to open the meeting in a normal, courteous way. They became defensive and started telling me that "I was missing the point" and claiming that it was "his meeting" – in other words, he can do what he likes, and the candidate just has to put up with it.
It really doesn't matter what the point of the tests were. There are some basic skills in interviewing, and the very first is to make the candidate feel welcome and at ease. Establish that the interview is an environment where BOTH parties have an equal part to play. THEN you can do your tests or your role-play or whatever.
I ended the interview early because it was obvious within the first few minutes that I couldn't possibly work in an organization that fosters this kind of ethos.
Elastic: please insist that your interviewers have some training on modern interviewing etiquette. This experience left me with a very poor impression of the company.
Shows an abstract picture. Doesn't give context. Asks: What's the solution?
