Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience

Process

I was contacted by the Chief of Staff, who was very friendly and provided an overview of the interview process. According to both him and the recruiter I spoke with, the process would involve three stages:

  • An initial non-technical interview with an engineer
  • A second technical/practical interview with another engineer
  • Lastly, a systems design interview with a senior engineer

However, the actual interview process did not align with this outline.

The initial interview unexpectedly included technical questions for which I was not prepared. Additionally, the final interview focused on a coding problem rather than the anticipated systems design discussion.

As a result, I felt unprepared and misaligned with the expectations of each stage, which impacted my performance and reflected poorly on my overall qualifications.

While all interviewers were friendly and professional, I felt the process lacked clarity and could have been structured to better support candidates in performing their best. This discrepancy in expectations ultimately contributed to my not receiving an offer.
