Epic Systems Work Experiences

Average place to start a career. Bad place after 2 years

Software Developer • Current Employee

Madison, Wisconsin, United States

Pros: Good place if you want a career in healthcare. That's about the only good thing. Also a pretty campus and good food. You get to travel as part of work. This might be a good place for a developer for the first 1-2 years, in the sense that they can get a sense of the general development life cycle. Not really anything great in terms of engineering.

Cons: - No career progression. - You'll end up doing the same thing after 10 years here. - No transferable skillset in terms of technology. - Highly dependent on luck and the TL you get. - I've had more than 6 TLs over my last 3 years. None of these changes were my fault. Everything was moving around modules and TLs between teams. - No visibility or feedback on performance. You will be greeted with a bell curve anytime you ask for feedback. - Many developers leave Epic, and you'll find a quarter of your team gone every year.

Pros: Excellent pay for out of college. Rockstar health insurance. Nice on-campus amenities.

Cons: Executive staff are often out of touch with employee concerns, especially during the recent COVID crisis, although they did eventually come around. Abysmal vacation/time off. Sabbatical once every 5 years, but beyond that, never more than 3 weeks per year, regardless of tenure. Terrible work-life balance. If you try to work just 40 hours a week, expect a conversation with your supervisor.
