Last-minute mandatory travel can be thrown on your calendar at any moment. It's expected that that's reasonable, because when you're in implementation, all your time and energy goes into managing your customers' escalations. It's very difficult to manage a life outside of doing a good job in this role.
So glad I left before the roles were restructured. Don't fix what isn't broken.
