Pros

Good R&D experience across the whole development life cycle. Generally working with capable and motivated co-workers. Excellent benefits.

Cons

Ungodly amounts of process and bureaucracy that stifle innovation.

Leadership is increasingly digging their heels in on company "culture" at the expense of employee productivity and safety.

Advice to Management

Five years ago, I would have told anyone that Epic was unstoppable. Our employees and leadership were crushing it, adapting to the changing healthcare landscape and finding new ways to serve the healthcare community. Yes, Epic's "culture" has always been a little quirky, but overall, we were doing the right thing for our employees and customers. I thought I would retire from Epic!

Today, leadership is discarding that agility and focus and replacing it with demands to conform to the CEO's personal whims. Ordering employees back to campus during a pandemic, particularly when we've been incredibly successful supporting our customers while working from home, is unconscionable. The communication from management throughout the COVID-19 response has been condescending and often flat-out dishonest.

Get back to the culture that led to the company being successful: hiring smart people, supporting them, and removing barriers to their success. Recognize that you're competing for talent with much younger companies, and the standard for what tech employees expect is evolving. Think about whether work-from-campus and related policies are really the hills you want to die on.
