Pros
  • Full ownership of your project.
  • Excellent compensation.
  • Great community amongst the interns, especially with those who chose to live in the Epic-offered housing together.
  • Tons of fun intern social events.
  • Campus food is tasty and extremely affordable.
  • Beautiful campus with tons of greenery.
Cons
  • Experience heavily depends on your assigned team lead and mentor; expectations vary widely.
  • Some interns are under-managed and do very little, while others are held to high standards.
  • Extremely limited diversity, especially in software dev roles, with basically zero female developers.
  • Epic lags in innovation; for example, they over-rely on LLMs and don't explore many other AI techniques.
Advice to Management

Consider standardizing mentor and team lead expectations to create a more equitable experience.

Be more intentional with how AI projects are scoped: explore a broader range of AI methods beyond LLMs and thoroughly vet the ongoing use of LLMs.

Most importantly: invest in improving team diversity and representation. The current lack of gender diversity is extremely noticeable and extremely disappointing.
