I was contacted by a friend who has just started working there. I was introduced to a recruiter who then scheduled a phone interview with an engineer. After a brief chat about my career, we started a coding session in ColabEdit. The interviewer copy-pasted the question into the text box and asked me to start coding. Although the questions were simple, it was not my brightest interview; I should have prepared.
- Design a text editor as a web service.
- Implement an algorithm to reverse words in a string ("hello world" -> "world hello").
- Count the words in a string.

Expedia is great… but the technology stack is a nightmare

Pros: Reasonably stable. Most people who were there when I started are still there.
Just enough management structure. Not too flat, not too tall.
Cons: Risk-averse – it is nearly impossible to get some projects in because test is terrified that it will destabilize the product. This means that most major changes that would dramatically improve the product are impossible to push through.
When game-changing design changes do come through, they are very poorly managed and executed and end up making things worse. No wonder test is terrified of things.
Status quo is the norm. Any attempts to deviate from the status quo will bring much personal pain.

Stop hiring outside executives who come with the pre-notion that current technology choices are wrong

Pros: Opportunities to prove yourself.
Support to improve and enhance skills.
Fair compensation.
Work-Life Balance.
Cons: Moving to downtown (worst decision by management in my 5 years).
Offices for managers and cubicles for employees (second worst decision). This will create a sense of inequality.
Increasing bureaucracy. Lots of time is wasted in fruitless and/or redundant discussions and meetings.
