Process

Process:

  1. OA
  2. Work simulation/personality test
  3. Two 1-hour technical interviews

Recruiters were really nice, responded quickly, and things went well. Unfortunately, they don't negotiate new grad offers. The work simulation was really long but not too bad, I suppose.

The first interview went terribly. There was an issue with the platform used for the interview, so I couldn't use my best language and instead had to use a language that I haven't used in a while. The interviewer became so frustrated with me that he began yelling at me, which lasted for the duration of the interview. If I tried to use comments to write down my thought process, he yelled at me to stop. He yelled "Nooo! No!!" when I wrote anything that was not on the right track. If I made typos, he yelled. When asking about my experience, I gave typical STAR-based responses that landed me offers at other companies. The interviewer kept yelling and asked me to "give numbers" and continued to yell at me. It was so disorienting and nerve-wracking that I was in tears by the end of it and just wanted it to finish.

I logged off the platform and returned shortly after to prepare for the next interview, and the guy was still there, sounding like he was screaming in frustration at someone else or to himself in a foreign language. Once he saw I was back on, he quickly muted himself and logged off.

The next interviewer was very kind, patient, and professional. There were no issues there. The question was a bit difficult for me, but he asked guiding questions and worked with me whenever I had ideas.

The offer was decent for the Chicago area, and there are sign-on bonuses for two years. I decided to decline the offer since Expedia does not negotiate, and the technical interview left such a terrible impression on me. I decided to take a better offer with a FAANG company. I never had this kind of experience in a technical interview, so it really turned me off from the idea of working at Expedia. I was concerned if the work culture would be similar, if an employee lost their patience so easily to the point that they'd yell at a candidate when they should be positively representing the company. If I reapply in the future, I hope things go better and that I don't get that interviewer again.
