Pros

Depends on the team, but some people and managers are excellent and very nice. People are very helpful and willing to help if needed.

Cons

The leadership is really unorganized, I mean VPs and up. Re-orgs happen every few months, and nobody has any clue why or what the point is. It seems like "re-orgs" are just a curtain behind layoffs, as re-orgs and layoffs come together.

Promotion culture is really bad. They don't emphasize or see promotions as important. People who deserve to get promoted and work extra hours don't get promoted, and people who don't deserve it sometimes get it. It really doesn't make sense. You don't seem to get anything from working extra hard. Some people truly want to and have the motivation, but when it's not seen, people lose motivation.

I'm a senior, but if I were entry-level, I would want to avoid Expedia if I could. They don't really care about personal skill growth or giving you what's needed to master the domain. This is very inefficient. If you want great engineers who can propel the company to be a top tech company, then you should invest in the young engineers; it's worth it.

They don't know how to lay off. I have seen the most talented engineers we have laid off, just to have us re-hire someone worse a few months later. We lose great talent because of this. Layoffs will always happen for sure, but as someone who has worked in three major tech companies, I can say that Expedia doesn't handle layoffs correctly. It's a big mess, and a lot of times, they lay off the wrong people.

Advice to Management

Stop with these crazy reorgs every few months; it's toxic and makes people want to leave. If you want to be a top tech company, then you need top talent. To get top talent, you need to promote more, promote those who deserve it, and stop with the toxic promotion cycle.

Also, in terms of layoffs, I understand layoffs happen, but do it smarter. Lay off only those who truly need to be laid off. The amount of times they laid off people from my team who were great and we truly needed, just to have Expedia hire again a few months later to refill the role, makes no sense.

In my opinion, layoffs should occur if someone gets two straight "not meets expectations." I have met people who are the best engineers we have, always get amazing ratings, then only once got a "not meets" because they were having personal issues for just a few months, and then in the next layoff cycle, they were part of the layoff even though they had already bounced back and were back to being the most talented engineers we have.
