Terrible work-life balance in core transactional orgs

Pros

Many things to learn, open towards new technologies for new service migrations.

Cons

Unstable system (constant pages). There's no time to improve the system due to frequent new demands from customer teams. Devs have to act as project managers, developers, and operations specialists. Lots of deployment red tape.

Advice to Management

Hire more devs to distribute the on-call rotation better and reduce individual workload. Hire more program managers. Improve compensation to be more competitive, especially if the org is doing well.

I saw many co-workers in my division leave for Amazon and claim afterwards that at Amazon they were actually doing less work than they were in our org at Expedia.
