Pros

It is a rocketship in a winner-takes-all market, so financially it will do really well.

Cons
  • Middle managers often bully employees into submission. Perhaps bullying is acceptable at other local Kitchener-Waterloo companies, so managers bring it with them to Faire.

  • Managers have way too much power in the organization. The manager always has the last word in rating, regardless of how good the peer feedback is in perf reviews. The manager also has too much power in deciding what someone gets to work on. So if the manager doesn't like someone, they can and do often screw over the rank-and-file employees.

  • People Ops (HR) works for managers. So bringing up manager issues to People Ops does not do anything.

Advice to Management

Middle management gets away with bad behavior. Right now, those issues may be getting masked because stock prices are skyrocketing.

If you want to build a company that engineers truly want to work at, regardless of stock price, then fix those issues!
