Software Engineer Interview Experience - United States

July 14, 2025
Negative ExperienceNo Offer

Process

The interview process involved:

  • A take-home coding assignment about building a simplistic version of an AI chat playground.
  • A full interview loop, including behavioral, technical review of the take-home, system design, and a product interview.

The interviewers didn't seem to have a good grasp of what they were looking for. For example, my system design interviewer seriously asked me about what setTimeout(fn, 0) does. My technical interviewer actually challenged me to find a package on npm, download it, and incorporate it into the take-home.

The lower-level engineers generally seemed pleasant enough, but the co-founder and one of the leading product people came across as very unpleasant. They seemed as if they were forced to be there and didn't want to be talking to me at all.
