Software Engineer Interview Experience - New York, New York

Process

I applied through a recruiter and was then asked to do a technical interview on Zoom.

The interview was extremely disorganized. My interviewer joined the call from his bed (I could clearly see he was lying in his bed on his stomach) and then interrupted our talk to take a personal phone call.

After we finished talking about the company and my background, we moved on to the coding question. It was clear he wasn't listening to what I was saying because he had moved to his kitchen and was eating a full meal. I was talking through my approach, but he had muted himself and kept glancing to the side while eating.

Eventually, he asked me to take a different approach, but this could have been avoided if he was actively paying attention to what I was saying. He clearly had no interest in the interview, and it would have saved us both time if they had just cancelled the interview or not asked me to move on to the technical screening.

I can't speak about the whole company, but this person (who is supposed to be a "senior" engineer at the company) was probably the worst interviewer I've ever had.

Anyways, it seemed as if he didn't know he was supposed to be interviewing me or didn't care about it. I've never had an interviewer join a Zoom call lying down in their bed and then proceed to eat a full meal on camera, so it was certainly an experience, to say the least.
