Software Engineer Interview Experience - United States

Process

A recruiter came to a campus fair. I gave them my resume, and they emailed me a coding challenge, which I failed. The challenge was 90 minutes long and included two different questions, but I ran out of time. I spent too much time on one question without realizing that the second one was harder. This is for a startup, though, so maybe they are just expecting everyone to be super fast.

Questions

  1. Log of phone calls. I had to read it, parse it, and come up with a monthly bill based on some rules. It took too long to make this code nice.

  2. Graph question. Given a graph, I had to compute a list of how many cities were at a hop distance away from a specific node. I got confused with the representation of the graph (using one array only).
