Pros

Structure. You know your job, your position as an employee, and what is expected.

There is a development process, checks, reviews, and communication.

The Java Center of Excellence, Web Center of Excellence, and Creative Design and Usability teams are great examples of technology leaders inside the enterprise.

All engineers should have this kind of experience and take what it has to offer in structure.

Cons

If you are looking for bleeding edge in J2EE development, this ain't it. Much of the project work tends to be monotonous. Engineers tend to be treated as interchangeable parts.

Advice to Management

Open up the network to BYO (bring your own) devices. The effort to protect the network from rogue devices might not be worth the innovation you are preventing. Make it easier for business owners to use internal services instead of shoveling cash to vendors.
