Pros

The company is great for you if attending to family is your only priority. You can relax. Every product you work on has the potential to reach millions. The CEO says all the right things, even though he is not a software guy.

Cons

Too conservative for innovation.

Top-down, rigidly hierarchical structure.

Too many meetings.

Too many COTS solutions.

Too many consultants.

Pay far below market.

Prejudice abounds (mostly a Dearborn problem, but somewhat an issue in California and the UK).

Far too many ME's.

My immediate manager, nor his manager, have any idea what I do at all. They are a waste of money.

Advice to Management

Google "open source".

Software engineers aren't commodities or slaves.

Please stop buying half-baked, unproven startups for $30-$40 million and invest that capital into elite software engineering teams and projects within the company—not Chariot, Autonomic, Spin, Transloc. If not, buy a better startup for a billion or two.

Fire racists and sexists much faster, otherwise it will cost Ford in more ways than one.
