Brought in for a half-day interview. First met with an HR woman; it was a very pleasant conversation. Then met with the team: four guys, none over 30 years old. Everything went swimmingly well until the last session with the hiring manager, a woman probably in her 30s. Her last question was the "where do I see myself in five years" one, and I jokingly replied, "Retired!" I then explained what I really meant: at this stage in my career, I am not angling to climb ladders but to be a good team contributor. Her demeanor turned cold, and I was quickly sent on my way. I consider it my first encounter with overt age discrimination (I'm 59).
