Pros

Challenging work.

Interesting technical problems.

Great leadership training programs if you are one of the chosen few.

Good career opportunities.

Cons

The pay is well below industry averages.

In recent years, they have slashed what was once a good benefits package.

Advice to Management

I think you are well aware of it, but a lot of people have left in recent years.

GE Aviation has a large experience gap between the 15+ years of experience and the 0-5 years. It's the 5+ years of experience folks who are leaving, and a lot of the ones who remain are discontent.

Right now, it's not a good situation to be in. A lot of my colleagues have left.

It's very simple, and no retention committee will spell it out for you clearer. Pay people what they deserve, and they will stay.

Your salary surveys lie to you. Now that I've seen a couple of other companies from the inside, I can tell you that every company uses the same salary surveys to reach the same conclusion: "we are paying our employees at slightly above the average for similar companies".

It's just not true. Someone must be manipulating the data, because I have worked at similar positions at three companies in the same industry doing similar work. GE pay is far and away the worst of the three, yet HR says they pay at a rate slightly above the industry averages. Coincidentally, each of the other three companies reached the same conclusion but at a higher pay rate.
