Pros

People are open to receiving and giving constructive feedback regularly. For Software Engineers specifically, you get the chance to work on a lot of different parts of software development:

  • Gathering user requirements
  • Translating the requirements into code
  • Testing
  • Deploying technology
Cons

Low pay compared to competitors in the tech industry. Even the top performers were making less than the average performer at competing tech companies. Reviews and bonuses can be arbitrary and be based off of office politics. Some of the tooling can feel a bit outdated as well.

Advice to Management

If you want to retain Software Engineers, please compensate them at the same level as your competitors and invest in technology. Telling people that working at Goldman Sachs is part of the compensation does not make people want to stay when they are paid less than their peers in the industry.
