Process

The process started out great. I was contacted by a recruiter from Google who thought I would be a good fit for this role and began the interview process.

We spoke numerous times about the position, and within a week, I was interviewing with one of the engineers on-site. I then received another phone call from the recruiter, before the interview, telling me that another position had just opened up that looked the same, except it had 50% international travel. I told her I would be very interested in the traveling position.

The interview with the engineer went great. We had quite a bit in common, and she was very knowledgeable about her position. She asked me different questions about my current position and improvements I've made and implemented throughout the years. We parted ways in a very positive manner, and I was very excited about this new opportunity.

I was then contacted by the recruiter who congratulated me and said I would be going on-site for my next interview at Google. Ecstatic, I prepared: I got my suit pressed, purchased a new pair of shoes, and ensured I was ready to go, 100%. I told my friends and family that I had made it to an on-site interview with Google. I was thrilled about this new opportunity...

It turns out, the new position the recruiter was talking about before my interview with the engineer was not the same (it only appeared that way because they copied and pasted the job description). I was transferred to a new recruiter who didn't seem to have a care in the world. During my conversations with this new recruiter, I pressed hard to find out more about the position. She simply read, word-for-word, what the previous job description said and appeared irritated when I asked. Eventually, she set me up with another interview with a hiring manager, I believe it was.

This next interview was a bit awkward. Not only was I no longer going to New York to interview on-site, but it was scheduled at 3 am Pacific time over a webcam. I was then asked questions about a job description that I had not been informed about yet, even though their interview preparation guides advised to study and master their posted job descriptions.

That being said, the interview did not go well, and I honestly did not feel I wanted to send my career in this direction after finally learning more about what the job actually entailed. I sat on the decision for a few days and then emailed the recruiter letting her know that I was very thankful and would still be interested in the previous position, or any other positions, but to please cancel the remaining scheduled interviews for this position.

During the next scheduled interview, there was a missed call on my phone. It was pretty evident at this point the recruiter had ignored my request...
