Software Engineer Interview Experience - London, United Kingdom

Process

First, I must point out that I did not receive an offer and my application was for an internship position. I have outlined the stages of the interview process below.

  • Stage 1: I spoke with an HR representative who then connected me to a hiring manager. I subsequently sent my CV to the hiring manager.
  • Stage 2: I assume the hiring manager sent my CV to Googlers to find suitable engineers to interview me. The manager then arranged a date (with my input, of course) for two phone interviews.
  • Stage 3: I had both interviews on the same day. The first interview evaluated my data structure and algorithm competence, while the second evaluated my competence in web application security. During the interviews, I had access to a shared Google Doc to either code the given exercise or write my thought process.
  • Stage 4: The hiring manager contacted me after the Googlers submitted their interview reports. Unfortunately, I was not successful.
  • Stage 5: The hiring manager remained in touch and directed me to online materials that may help me improve should I wish to apply again.

Questions

Generally, in the first interview, the questions I was asked were about my choice of data structures and algorithms in solving exercises I was given.

In the second interview, I was asked questions around CSRF, CSP, and network security protocols.
