Software Engineer Interview Experience - Mountain View, California

Process

I received an email from a recruiter at Google. We then spoke on the phone about my skills and other aspects of my resume.

I had a technical interview over the phone, which I passed. It involved a simple coding question and some questions on Java, a language I indicated I was mostly familiar with.

My interview process took a long time because I had to attend a couple of conferences after passing the phone interview.

For the on-site interview, I reviewed algorithms and common Java questions I found online. This was very helpful, as some topics were unfamiliar to me after focusing on my Ph.D. with limited programming involvement.

In general, the interviewers were friendly and not intimidating, contrary to what some might expect from Google engineers. I felt I had performed well, especially on the algorithms section, but I did not receive an offer.

The recruiter was kind enough to call me personally to inform me, rather than sending a generic email stating they did not have a match for me.
