Software Engineer Interview Experience - Mountain View, California

Process

I had a phone screen where the interviewer didn't ask me to write any code. Following this, I received an email offering an onsite interview.

I mentioned to the recruiter that the initial interviewer hadn't requested any coding. As a result, I had to complete a second phone screen before the onsite interview was scheduled.

An onsite interview typically takes a full day. I needed to nominate five entire days within a two-week period for the interview to be scheduled.

At the onsite, the room I was in had a broken air conditioner, and it was a very hot day. The engineers interviewing me repeatedly checked their phones and responded to texts. I would often look back at them after coding on the whiteboard and explaining my solution, only to discover they weren't paying attention. Strangely, at least one of my interviewers didn't know Python, even though that was the language I had stated I would be interviewing with. They didn't know what the zip function did and criticized my solution for using it, despite it being one of about a dozen built-in functions one would expect a candidate to use in a coding interview. The engineers conducting interviews seemed to have been forced into the role and didn't enjoy it.

Some of the interviewers were good, though. They asked some interesting questions, and I also received a free lunch, which was quite tasty.

I don't actually know if I have an offer yet. I have to wait a month to find out.
