A Google recruiter emailed and called me out of the blue, stating that someone internal (without specifying who) had made a recommendation and wanted to know if I was interested in a position. They were very positive and made it sound as if they were genuinely interested.
The email mentioned that I had qualifications they were looking for. The recruiter asked me some questions and said the process would take about five weeks. They followed up by scheduling a technical phone interview.
The interviewer was punctual and polite. He asked some relatively obscure questions that I didn't grasp immediately but did once I understood the intent. He then asked me to code something in a Google Doc while on the phone, and then asked me to code something else after the call concluded.
I received another call indicating they wished to conduct another phone technical interview. Someone else called and asked further questions regarding Java collections. I believe I pretty much nailed the second interviewer's technical questions, but I didn't get any impression that they were personally interested in me at all. The interviewer had me code another exercise after the call, which was fairly straightforward and I feel I completed it very thoroughly.
That was it; they didn't ask me to come in for an in-person interview or anything. I received a call from the recruiter saying the committee was looking for someone with different qualifications and that perhaps some positions would open up in about a year. I was a little puzzled by this, as they had initially contacted me because of my qualifications, but, whatever.
Overall, everyone was very polite, pleasant, and positive.
