Software Engineer Interview Experience - Tokyo, Japan

March 1, 2015
Neutral ExperienceNo Offer

Process

The interview process is for a Mountain View, USA position.

I was approached by their onsite recruiter, who then proceeded with a quick initial phone screen, followed by a technical phone interview a week later.

Within a few days, I received positive feedback and then proceeded to an onsite interview in Tokyo. This process was quite long (up to one month) to allow adequate preparation time.

The onsite interview consisted of five 45-minute sessions with a mix of algorithm and system design questions. I performed very well in four of them and fairly well on the fifth, which allowed me to pass this interview stage.

However, the hiring process was very long (taking well over a month), by which time the H1B visa deadline had passed. Unfortunately, there were no other matching positions at other locations at that time, so there was no offer.

Questions

(All questions are from phone screen, as onsite interviews are covered by NDA)

  1. Reverse the order of the vowels in the string, in-place.

  2. Count the number of connected "islands" on a 2D array representing a map of the world.

  3. Find the sequence of words in the dictionary which differ from the previous word by only one letter, starting with "cat" and ending with "dog".

  4. Write a function which sets all of the bits on a given row of a 2D bit array to 1, but leaves all other rows alone.
