Google has grown very fast and is struggling to maintain its culture in the face of all the new people. It also struggles to find consistent product direction now that it's branching more aggressively out of search & ads.
Choose your battles. If you're going to play in product-focused business areas, put the right expertise and incentives in place to make products that work really well. Don't try to do everything, especially in a bottom-up fashion.
