There was good compensation and still many excellent people, most from a time when it was a cool company.
Google is an umbrella for independent corp organizations. Not much is left of the engineering-driven culture of the old times. Whether it is still a good experience depends on the particular org one is in.
It is your job to create an environment of stability and sustainability so engineers can focus on work.
